When you click a picture of someone, what you would prefer is that you get a picture in natural lighting where the person looks a part of the picture, rather than capturing the shot of someone who’s either squinting is looking like a deer caught in headlights from the excessive flash light used. And that is just one problem when you decide to take a picture in a dimly lit area using a flash. Not just can it be increasingly distracting to the people around, but it can also give results which can be highly unflattering.
However, if you can think of no way to take better digital photos without using flash, it is time you started playing around with your digital camera because there are more than one way to help you get that perfect shot, even when you are clicking your picture in a place which is dimly lit.
So now that the use of a flash is ruled out, the next question apparently would be with regards to the best option when it comes to clicking pictures in areas with low light conditions. In order to obtain the best results, there are a couple of adjustments that can be done to your digital camera.
One idea would be to reduce the shutter speed so that the camera can take in the maximum light in the time taken by the camera shutter to close. This helps in gaining the maximum exposure but can get a little tricky owing to the fact that it is difficult to hold the camera still for a longer duration. Even a slight twitch might result in a blurred photograph which can be a setback when compared against what you set out to achieve. Also, using this method will not help if what you are trying to capture is a moving object since that would require the shutter speed to be increased to be able to capture the still.
Another option available to assist in taking pictures in low light conditions is to increase the ISO settings of your camera. This will help in increasing the sensitivity of your camera towards light and therefore will allow capturing maximum light while clicking a photograph. However, the one side effect of increasing the ISO settings number is that the picture will lack clarity and will have a grainy look which in photographers’ term is referred to as noise.
Yet another option available to allow taking pictures of objects placed in dim light is get a fast lens which have wide apertures and allow more light to be captured by the camera’s sensor. The one thing you need to cognizant of while using this lens however is to be sure of the point of focus as this lens might give you results which might not be as expected.
And in order to ensure that you achieve success in clicking pictures in dim lit conditions, the one unavoidable factor is practice which goes a long way in ensuring you are aware of the result each click will give you.
